What is Coir Compost?
What is coir compost, and how do you use it?
We’re big fans of coir compost, and we think you will be too!
Coir (pronounced koy-uh) is an eco-friendly growing medium made from the husk of coconuts. It comes from a sustainable and renewable source, is naturally peat-free and is perfect for everything from compact indoor planters to full garden beds.
It’s already trusted by commercial growers and is fast becoming a favourite among home gardeners.
Our coir compost, part of a range proudly developed by Pronto Seed for eco-conscious growers, comes in dry, compact discs or granulated form. Both are 100% natural, biodegradable and expand into fluffy, crumbly compost with just a splash of water.
Understanding coconut coir
Coconut trees are incredibly productive - a single tree can produce up to 150 coconuts each year. The coconuts are harvested for their fruit, milk and oil, and the fibrous husk has traditionally gone to waste.
But not anymore! The husk contains a useful material called coir pith. It’s this pith, sometimes called coco peat, that makes ideal compost. It’s very absorbent, with a structure that holds water well while still allowing airflow to plant roots.
Coir is also:
-
Free from soil-borne pathogens and weeds
-
Lightweight, compact and completely dry until hydrated
-
Easy to store, with no smell or mess
By using coconut husks to make compost, we’re helping to reduce waste and make better use of a naturally renewable resource.
Why gardeners love Pronto Seed coir potting soil
Our coir compost discs fit beautifully into modern life, especially for urban gardeners who might not have access to a shed or garage for storing large bags of damp compost.
Each hard, dry 10cm disc is made from 100% natural coir. Just add 300ml of tap water and watch as the disc expands to create 1.3 litres of rich, soft potting soil, perfect for sowing seeds, potting on seedlings or refreshing houseplants.
If you live in a flat, you don’t need to drag heavy bags of messy compost up to your apartment. Simply store a few dry discs in a drawer and hydrate them when you’re ready. Instant compost when and where you need it!
It’s that easy. And when you’re done, there’s nothing to throw away, coir is completely biodegradable.
Our discs are packed in recyclable cardboard, so every part of the product - from box to compost - supports a more sustainable way to grow.
Are you ready to switch to coir?
Switching to coir compost (and away from peat-based potting material) helps protect and preserve fragile ecosystems while supporting a global chain of sustainable agriculture.
And for you, it means cleaner hands, healthy plants and no messy bags of compost to store.
All of our Eco Grow Kits, Planter Gifts and Grow Your Own Bonsai Kits include our coir compost discs, meaning they arrive with everything needed to get growing.
