Meet the Chillies

  • Anaheim (500–1,000 SHU): Long, slender peppers that ripen from green to red. Mild and versatile in the kitchen.
  • Cayenne (30,000–50,000 SHU): Thin, curved chillies with a rippled skin. Classic for drying or adding heat to dishes.
  • Jalapeño (2,500–8,000 SHU): Plump, green chillies that turn red when ripe. Perfect for salsas and pickling.
  • Habanero (100,000–350,000 SHU): Small, blocky chillies with a wrinkled skin and intense heat. A Caribbean favourite.

How to Grow

Step 1 – Prepare Coir: Add water to expand the coir discs until soft and crumbly.

Step 2 – Sow Seeds: Place 3–4 seeds on the surface, press lightly, and cover with a thin layer of coir.

Step 3 – Germination: Position propagator in a warm, sunny spot. Germination takes 2–3 weeks depending on variety.

Step 4 – Transplant: Move the strongest seedlings into the prepared bucket planters. Handle roots carefully.

Step 5 – Grow On: Place buckets in a sunny location. Chillies can be grown outdoors once frost risk has passed or indoors for a longer season.

Top Tips for Best Results

  • Start early in the season for hotter, heavier crops.
  • Feed with liquid fertiliser once flowers appear and again as fruits swell.
  • Support heavy fruiting branches with canes to avoid breakage.
  • Harvest with scissors to prevent plant damage. Chillies can be used fresh, dried or frozen.
