  • Height: 25–60cm
  • Spread: Approx. 30cm per plant

How to Sow Field Poppy Seeds

Sow Outdoors:

  • Sowing time: March to May or August to September
  • Wait until the last frost has passed.
  • Rake and water the soil well before sowing.
  • Create 3mm deep drills and sow seeds thinly in lines.
  • Cover very lightly with soil and keep moist until established.

Sow Indoors (for early colour):

  • Sow into trays of compost in autumn.
  • Harden off seedlings for 7 days before planting outside.
  • Space plants 30cm apart when large enough to handle.

Top Tips for Best Results

  • Grow in full sun for best colour and flower density.
  • Thin seedlings to give each plant space to develop.
  • Do not water over the flowers — poppy petals are delicate.
  • Let flowers go to seed naturally for self-sown blooms next year.
