Dahlia Collarette Growing Guide

Dahlia collarette flowers are a type of dahlia known for their distinctive appearance and intricate, layered petals. They are a member of the Asteraceae family and are native to Central and South America, although they are now widely cultivated and appreciated all over the world.

Collarette dahlias are characterized by a single row of larger petals surrounding a central disc of smaller petals, giving them a unique and eye-catching appearance. They typically grow to a height of 2 to 4 feet and produce flowers up to 6 inches in diameter. The blooms come in a wide range of colours—red, pink, orange, yellow, white, and bi-colours—and are popular in cut flower arrangements and garden borders.

They are fairly easy to grow with well-draining soil and regular watering. Usually planted in spring, they bloom in late summer or early autumn.

How to Grow Dahlia Collarette Flowers

Growing Dahlia collarette flowers is relatively easy, but it does require some planning. Follow these steps for best results:

1. Choose a sunny location

Select a spot that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

2. Prepare the soil

Use well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure.

3. Plant the tubers

  • Plant in spring after the last frost.
  • Dig a hole about 6–8 inches deep.
  • Place the tuber with the concave side facing up.
  • Cover with soil and water thoroughly.

4. Water and fertilize

  • Water deeply once a week, more during dry periods.
  • Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a balanced 10-10-10 formula.

5. Support the plants

As they grow tall, stake or cage the plants to prevent them from toppling over.

6. Deadhead regularly

Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms and reduce disease risk.

7. Dig up the tubers in autumn (if needed)

  • Let the foliage die back naturally.
  • Dig up the tubers before the first frost.
  • Clean and store them in a cool, dry place over winter.
