    Main Crop Potatoes

    (King Edward and Maris Piper Variety)
    Begin sowing these seed potatoes in mid to late April. They take longer to mature than the previous early crops, however they produce much larger potatoes that are highly versatile and great for all types of cooking. If you are growing these at home or in an allotment, we suggest after chitting the potatoes they are planted straight in the ground to give the crops more space to grow. You will be able to harvest your main crop potatoes between September and October.

    .............

    Preparation

    Before you place your seed potatoes in the soil, you will need to prepare them to ensure you get the very best crop possible. This process is called chitting. To begin you will need to;

    1. Place the seed potatoes in a tray
    2. Place the tray in a light and cool area
    3. Remove all but three or four of the strongest ‘eyes’ that grow
    4. Once the sprouts are 2.5cm long, plant the seed potato in the soil, being careful not to break the ‘eye’

    .............

    Planting

    To give your potato crops enough room to grow, sow your seed potatoes at depth of 10cm with a measurement of 30cm between each potato in well fertilised soil or in potting compost. If you are planting in rows, make sure there is 60-70cm between each row.

    If you are planting in February and March, use a form of frost protection to ensure you maximise your crop. Either a cold frame or plastic or glass cover will suffice to protect the new plants from the elements.

    You can also plant you seed potatoes in grow bags or rubble bags. Simply fill to within 1 inch of the top of the bag with multi purpose compost and make sure there are holes in the sides of the bag to allow water to escape. Then place your seed potato 5 inches deep and cover with the compost.
